This Tuesday, January 14, the government of the Netherlands accused the administration of Nicolás Maduro of “escalating” the diplomatic conflict by limiting the number of French, Dutch and Italian diplomats authorized to remain in Venezuela to three per country.

“This is an escalation by Maduro that makes the dialogue even more complicated,” he said in a statement sent to the news agency AFP Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp, ​​adding that there would “undoubtedly be a response” to this decision.

France and Italy have not yet reacted.

Netherlands with “hostile behavior”

«We regret this procedure. We will also summon the Venezuelan chargé d’affaires to convey this message and ask for clarifications,” Veldkamp continued. «We will also call for joint action at the level of the European Union (EU). “We will examine with our EU partners what this means for our relations,” he added.

The Netherlands received Edmundo González Urrutia – who is the subject of an arrest warrant in Venezuela – at the residence of the Dutch embassy in Caracas, before the opposition leader reached an agreement with the authorities to leave the country and go into exile in Spain. in September.
