Nestlé optimizes its value chain: it stops buying milk in Caquetá and bets on another department

Felipe González, CEO of Nestlé Colombia, announced that the Swiss multinational will stop purchasing fresh milk in the department of Caquetá, as part of its strategy to optimize its value chain.

This measure responds to reasons of operational efficiency, mainly due to the distance between Caquetá and the Nestlé plant in Valledupar, which exceeds 1,300 kilometers.

Decrease in stockpiling in Caquetá

In 2020, 9% of the milk used by Nestlé Colombia came from Caquetá, but in the last three years, the company has progressively reduced its purchases in that region.

Currently, the department only provides 3% of the milk that Nestlé purchases nationwide, equivalent to 20,000 liters per day.

Within two weeks, the company will completely suspend the purchase of milk in Caquetá.

Felipe González clarified that this decision is not related to public order problems, but rather to the sustainability and efficiency of the business.

“It is difficult to operate at a distance of 1,300 km. It has no connotation of public order,” the director explained.

New collection in Antioquia and Valledupar

From now on, Nestlé will source its milk from the Antioquian municipalities of San Pedro, Santa Rosa and Entrerríos, as well as from the surrounding area of ​​Valledupar, where one of its main plants is located.

At this plant, the company produces powdered milk under well-known brands such as Klim, among others.

González also referred to the decision of the Ministry of Commerce to impose an ad valorem tariff on imports of powdered milk from the United States.

He said the measure does not affect Nestlé, since 90% of its supply is local.

“We play by the local rules and act accordingly,” he said.

US$100 million investment for the next three years

Nestlé Colombia announced a US$100 million investment plan for the next three years, focused on strengthening its local business.

“We need to boost the dairy business and enter new categories,” said González, who sees an optimistic future for the industry in the country.

In Colombia, approximately 19 million liters of milk are produced daily, of which Nestlé purchases 1%, equivalent to 200,000 liters per day.

Finally, Felipe González highlighted that the areas of Valledupar and Antioquia, where Nestlé has carried out pilot tests, have proven to be more efficient, unlike Caquetá, which is affected by the volatile climate.

This strategy clearly demonstrates Nestlé’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability in its operations, aligned with the company’s future growth in the country.
