The lawyer and researcher Martha Patricia Molina He assured that it was “expected” that Nicaragua would obtain a low score regarding the corruption index, due to the “high levels of nepotism and impunity found in the Nicaraguan State.” Transparency International placed the Central American country in 167th place worldwide, one position less than the ranking corresponding to 2021, and with only 19 points out of 100 possible. With these numbers he heads the list of corrupt in Central America.
In an interview for the podcast NOWof Article 66Molina emphasized that “continuing the high levels of nepotism and impunity that are present in all State institutions and in the State powers, it is most likely that we will get the lowest scores compared to Haiti, Somalia and Syria, which are the most corrupt countries in the world.”
Nicaragua is one of the worst evaluated countries in Latin America and the second most corrupt country in the regionbeing surpassed only by Venezuela, which ranks 177.

The researcher also pointed out that since 2012, the Nicaraguan Corruption Perception Index (Ipc) “projects a serious deterioration,” which shows that the country governed by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo is a “highly corrupt state”.
In ten years, Nicaragua has dropped 10 points in the corruption ranking, in 2012 the country reached 29 points and this year it barely reached 19, according to Transparency International this score is alarming.
For its part, the Ortega regime ignores the recommendations made by the corruption index for the country to reduce this problem.
Martha Patricia Molina maintained that “Ortega y Murillo does absolutely the opposite of what the executive director of Transparency International is recommending. The regime has completely annihilated the entire democratic society in Nicaragua, civil society, people who have an opinion; So in no way are we as a country going to be able to eradicate corruption and demand a safer world if the dictatorship is definitely doing the opposite.”
Ortega dictatorship equals corruption
Furthermore, the opponent Hector Mairena He remarked that the presidential couple “promotes and maintains corruption in impunity; And it is the cement that keeps Ortega cohesive to a certain extent, because when corruption crosses the limits that Ortega and Murillo have imposed, then there are cases like the ones we are seeing, of internal conflicts and purges».
«The Ortega Murillo dictatorship is synonymous with corruption», stressed Mairena, in an interview for the podcast NOWwho urged the Nicaraguan people to know and realize that “only in democracy can we face corruption.”
The regime “is not there (in power) for political interests only, but is fundamentally motivated by making abusive and uncontrolled use of the treasury of public wealth, that is, I mean corruption,” he added.
