Santo Domingo.-The neonatal deaths They were reduced by 13%, equivalent to 200 fewer in the Dominican Republic, going from 1,522 in January-November 2023 to 1,322 in the same period of 2024, according to data from the National Health Service (SNS).
However, despite the fact that neonatal deaths decreased in the number of deaths in much of last year, it continues to be a challenge for the Dominican health system, since the annual average remains above 1,200 deaths.
This health problem experienced by the country reflects around 9,136 deaths in the period January – November from 2019 to 2024, with 2017 being the highest number.

The stillbirths from January-November 2024 are almost similar (one more) to the 1,531 deaths reported in the same period of 2020. However, it exceeds the number shown in 2019, that is, before the Covid-19 pandemic, in the in which authorities recorded 1,448 deaths.
During the observed period of 2021, 1,710 deaths were reported and, in 2022, there were 1,603 babies who lost their lives while their mothers were giving birth in the country’s public hospitals.
By centers
The Santo Domingo province and the National District metropolitan area report the highest number of stillbirths with 303 and 164, respectively, as of November 2024.
Within the first demarcation, the San Lorenzo de los Minas Maternal and Child Hospital registers 118 deaths.
A sum that represents the most preponderant at the national level for a health center. But, in addition, it is 38.9% of the deaths in that territory made up of 11 other hospitals.
On the other hand, the five centers in the National District reported 164 cases. Of this amount, the Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia Maternity Hospital reflects 147 deaths, for 89.6% in that area.
