According to the Barometer 2024, a report from the flight search engine Viajala.cl, The Serena and Montevideo are emerging as the favorite destinations of chileans for next year. This analysis, based on millions of searches carried out in Latin America, reflects important changes in the preferences and costs of the tourism market.
At the national level, The Serena has seen a 12% increase in popularity compared to 2023, accompanied by an 11% reduction in average round-trip flight prices. These figures position this city as the destination with the greatest growth in searches within Chilean territory, especially on routes from the north of the country, where costs have decreased by up to 23%.
However, it is not all good news. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), demand for tourist accommodation in the Coquimbo region fell by 28.5% in August 2024. Despite this, this low demand could be beneficial for travelers, offering more competitive prices in accommodation and tours. “It’s a good time to explore The Serena”says Thomas Allier, CEO of Viajala.
On the international scene, Montevideo leads preferences thanks to a 16% reduction in flight costs from Chili between 2023 and 2024. This decrease, combined with the increase in routes offered by low-cost airlines such as JetSMART and SKY, has boosted interest in the Uruguayan capital, consolidating it as an accessible and attractive destination.
Other favorite South American destinations
Other destinations south americanssuch as São Paulo and Medellín, also presented decreases in flight prices, although none reached the magnitude of Montevideo. In contrast, destinations like Miami recorded significant increases in costs, with prices up to 27% higher, which appears to have discouraged demand.
Meanwhile, flights to Europe remain stable in terms of costs, with cities such as Madrid and Rome registering increases in popularity, evidencing a mixed trend between stability and growth in the preferences of Chilean travelers.
