Negotiating delegation of the opposition met with relatives of political prisoners

The lawyers Yajaira Forero and Theresly Malavé will be a bridge of communication between the delegation of the Unitary Platform and the relatives of political prisoners. The negotiating team asked the relatives to manage the expectations of the process that takes place in Mexico

Representatives of the negotiating delegation of the Unitary Platform met this Wednesday the 14th with a group of relatives of political prisoners, where they offered details of the process that has been carried out in Mexico and recalled that the first point of the memorandum of understanding signed in 2021 involves the release of all those detained for political reasons in the country.

At least 60 family members participated in the meeting, according to a Press release, who exposed the injustices and torture of which political prisoners have been victims. They also appreciated the space to be able to express their desire for justice.

“If we don’t have negotiations, we don’t have the tools to fight for political prisoners, for any Venezuelan. That is why we all have to be defenders of this process, which, although it is the strongest we have achieved, due to international support and Norway’s dialogue, is still weak”, assured Gerardo Blyde, coordinator of the opposition delegation.

Blyde announced that the lawyer and leader of Primero Justicia, Yajaira Forero, and the director of the NGO Justicia y Proceso, Theresly Malavé, will be a bridge between the delegation and the relatives of the prisoners “while the other party to the negotiation accepts the participation mechanisms proposed in the memorandum of understanding”.

Different NGOs estimate the number of political prisoners, both civilian and military, in the country at more than 250. His relatives, including his children, have asked President Nicolás Maduro to intercede to obtain the release of all of them or a general amnesty be issued before Christmas.

The former mayor of Baruta recalled that “last year we wanted to start with the justice system and we made efforts to obtain releases or substitute measures and they were not possible, but we have to continue to exert strength together, understanding that we are not the democrats who are in power.” and that although we are in very unequal conditions to those of the counterpart, this is an ideal space not only to advocate for their release but also to get the regime to stop the revolving door. We need you to strengthen the process and be able to be useful to their causes”.

For his part, the leader Tomás Guanipa stressed that “all of us have lived through persecution, exile and even detention and for us what you are experiencing is something that we live in our own flesh and for this reason we want to be useful and without giving false illusions, ratify that everything we do is to ensure that no one else is persecuted.”

Stalin González also reiterated the delegation’s commitment, although he asked the next of kin to manage the expectations of this process and its achievements. “This is a long process but rest assured that we are going to put all our efforts into finding a path that brings solutions.”
