President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva participated this Tuesday (4th) in the ceremony for the promotion of general officers of the Armed Forces, at the Planalto Palace. The traditional event was the first of 2023, and usually takes place a few times a year.
In total, 56 new military personnel were promoted to the highest positions in the three Forces: general (Army), admiral (Navy) and brigadier (Brazilian Air Force). The promotion was published on March 31st.
Among the promoted military was Maria Cecilia Barbosa, who reached the rank of Rear Admiral of the Navy, the first black woman general officer of the Navy. “I feel very proud and happy to be representing a large portion of the Navy’s crew, which is the female portion”, she declared in a post published by the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.

The event was attended by the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, in addition to the commanders of the three Forces: General Tomás Ribeiro Paiva (Army), Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen (Navy) and Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno (Air Force).
