The Brazilian Navy issued a storm warning for the coast of Rio de Janeiro, starting at 12pm this Wednesday (31st) and ending at 6am on Thursday (January 1st). Waves can reach 2.5 meters in height, posing a risk to swimmers and small boats.
A hangover is a phenomenon that increases the agitation of the sea, with the possibility of the formation of strong currents and ditches. Waves can advance over the coast and cycle paths, so it is recommended to avoid the sea during the warning period and follow safety guidelines from the Navy and Fire Department.
See safety tips for swimmers during the hangover period:
- Avoid swimming in the sea and practicing water sports in areas with surf conditions;
- Do not stay at viewpoints on the coast or in places close to the sea during the warning period;
- Beachgoers must strictly follow the instructions of the Fire Department teams;
- Fishermen should avoid sailing while the undertow is active;
- Avoid cycling on the shore if the waves are reaching the bike path;
- In case of accidents at sea, do not try to rescue victims yourself. Call the Fire Department immediately by calling 193;
- Please pay attention to the warnings and take precautions to ensure your safety and that of others on the Rio de Janeiro waterfront in the coming days.
