Uruguay has around 720 kilometers of coastline, 480 of which extend over the Río de la Plata and 240 over the Atlantic Ocean. If the banks of the Uruguay River are taken into account, the country has a total of 1,200 kilometers of coastline. This represents almost four times the international border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, of 309 km, or almost eight times the border that separates England from Scotland, whose extension is 154 km.
