The National University of Piura (UNP) paid tribute to the president of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), Julio Velardefor his outstanding career, academic excellence, valuable contributions to the national economy and international recognition.
The UNP awarded Velarde the degree of honorary doctor, the highest academic recognition granted by this university, thus incorporating him into its university faculty. Businessmen, academic authorities, civil and military gathered on the campus of this university, in Piura, to pay tribute to the economist.
“We are granting Julio Velarde the honorary position of honorary professor and the degree of doctor, a recognition that we consider magnificent for us, for everyone and for this land of Piura. Velarde has fulfilled the constitutional mandate of preserving monetary stability, an achievement achieved thanks to his ability and leadership. For us, he almost represents the figure of a contemporary Miguel Grau,” said Humberto Correa, dean of the Faculty of Economics of the UNP.
For his part, the rector of the university, Enrique Cáceres, noted that the higher education institution “is honored to confer its highest academic distinction, the honorary doctorate, on Dr. Julio Velarde Flores, one of the most influential economists in Peru and Latin America, internationally recognized for his wisdom, integrity and dedication to the service of the country.”
Lessons learned
Julio Velarde thanked the institution for the recognition and highlighted that its work has always been to “fulfill the task of maintaining price stability.”
“Really, what I always seek is to simply fulfill my task. I don’t know if I deserve recognition for doing what corresponds to me, which is nothing other than seeking price stability. And it is a great effort, particularly in the face of the past,” commented the head of the BCR.
Likewise, he highlighted that Peru registers the lowest inflation in Latin America and that the country has accumulated 29 years with low inflation, thanks to the lessons learned from hyperinflation that caused decades of economic stagnation.

To the title awarded by the UNP are added those from the Universidad Católica San Pablo (September 2025), Universidad de Lima (August 2025), Universidad Señor de Sipán (July 2025) and Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (September 2024).
