The General Directorate of National Traffic of the Police, in its usual press conference before official media, shared the annual report of the results of the “National Road Emergency Plan.” The authorities revealed that between January 1 and December 29 of this year a total of 937 people died on the roads.
Commissioner General Jaime Vanegas, Inspector General of the Police, highlighted that although the number of 937 deaths remains high, compared to the same period in 2023, “it represents an achievement,” since 1,003 people died last year. on the tracks.
“It represents a significant achievement because despite having more vehicles, more drivers and more enabled roads throughout the country, we had fewer people killed in accidents,” said Commissioner General Vanegas.
More than half of those killed on the roads were on motorcycles
More than half (504) of the people who died in traffic accidents during 2024, Vanegas detailed, were on board motorcycles.
Last year, according to the inspector general, 518 people who died on the roads were on motorcycles, so they see the 2024 results as positive, since “there were 14 fewer people who died involving motorcycles.”
The main cause of traffic accidents with fatalities, the institution highlighted, was drunk driving, reckless driving and disrespect for traffic signs.
Commissioner General Vanegas said that between January 1 and December 29, 2024, 2,677 injured people were also recorded, 367 less than the previous year.
