On June 15, a national strike in education was decreed for 24 hours. The general secretary of the National Federation of Secondary Education Teachers (Phenapes), José Olivera, said last Wednesday about the measure that will be carried out in 19 days.

In this way all the branches of the area will make a national strike. The decision made by the workers’ union will be preceded by a mobilization.

Regarding the strike and its scope, it will encompass the National Administration of Public Education, the University of the Republic, the Technological University of Uruguay and will also have the support of the private sector through the National Union of Workers of the Teaching Private (Synthep).

It seeks to obtain answers to the “cut” of 80 million dollars made by the government between 2021 and 2022, which impacted learning conditions and the development of the educational system,” the publication indicates.

“The consequence is the salary loss of 8% and the reduction of jobs,” Olivera said. As she proclaims it, she calls for “real and democratic participation in educational transformation.” She also emphasizes the “rejection of the imposition of changes in education,” she continues to add. In addition, the “salary recovery, creation of positions, a decent budget and comprehensive education” are sought for a “true democratic transformation,” the document maintains.

Since May 25, a “National Educational Tour” has been carried out, which encompasses several departments and different localities of the same.
