Days after receiving a vote of confidence to finish leading the 64 team National Baseball Series (SNB)the sports authorities of Santiago de Cuba confirmed the dismissal of Eddy Cajigal as manager of the Wasps, after the use of what is known as an “inappropriate player” during a tournament match.
“The failure to adopt measures to avoid new occurrences of acts of indiscipline and violation of the regulations is unacceptable, which has a significantly negative impact on the development and general behavior of any team,” is stated in a statement posted on the Facebook profile of the governing body of sport in the province.
The final straw came this Wednesday, when the Santiago high command brought out Carlos Moinier as a pinch hitter, who was not among those available to perform in that clash at the Latinoamericano stadium.
After consuming the turn at bat, a protest was generated by the high command of the Industriales team, which thus ensured the victory “by rule.”
Despite the frustration of several players from Santiago, with some even opposed to continuing playing, the duel was completed that ended up favoring the locals with a score of 6-3.
According to the statement, “the current management was offered full confidence by our sports specialists, the Provincial Baseball Commission and the INDER management, but they have reached a point where we have fallen below the expectations of an entire people, especially our fans.”
The sports authorities add that Cajigal’s position will be assumed until the end of the calendar by Idalberto Lamothe Lombart, who until the time of his new appointment was serving as the team’s bench coach.
Lamothe Lombart was one of the additions recently announced, when the previous crisis broke out due to the mismanagement of players, which then forced the departure of provincial commissioner Yamil Ahuar Fondín, with almost a decade pulling the strings of this sport in the territory.
National Series: Wasps manager is saved after changes in the management team
These movements were then a kind of palliative to correct the team’s erratic course, which had caused defeats for violating the tournament regulations, especially regarding the use of pitchers.
After having played 56 games, the Santiago Wasps remain outside the qualifying zone for the postseason. For now they are in 11th place, with a balance of 25-29, now three and a half games away from the Gallos de Sancti Spíritus, who close the group of the possible eight qualifiers.
