MIAMI, United States. – The network of stations of the National Seismological Service of Cuba registered an earthquake of magnitude 4.9 degrees on the Richter scale 185 kilometers southeast of alligatorGuantánamo province, at 5:11 in the morning of this Tuesday.
The telluric movement did not cause material or human damage, according to the information disseminated by the National Seismological Service.
The earthquake, with an epicenter located at a depth of 10 kilometers, was also felt in the municipalities of Santiago de Cuba, in the province of the same name, and in the municipalities of Guantánamo and Caimanera, in the province of Guantánamo.
This incident marks the seventh perceptible tremor on the Island so far in 2023. According to the National Seismological Service, none of the earthquakes has caused infrastructure damage or injuries to date.
The eastern region of Cuba recorded a previous earthquake, of smaller magnitude, on May 26. This 3.5 magnitude tremor had its epicenter 32 kilometers southwest of Caimanera.
When reporting the earthquake on Tuesday, the EFE agency recalled that Cuba is located in a geologically active region, with the main seismic zones located in the eastern part of the country. These zones are linked to a fault at the limit of the North American plate, to which Cuba belongs, and the continuation of the northern fault of the neighboring island of Hispaniola, located to the southeast of the Caribbean country.
In 2022, 13 perceptible earthquakes were registered in Cuba, mostly in the eastern provinces. The Island has experienced several large-magnitude earthquakes in recent decades, including a magnitude 6.9 earthquake on May 25, 1992, and a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on January 28, 2020, which was felt throughout the national territory. despite having its epicenter in the vicinity of the Cayman Islands.
