The leaders of the different sectors of the National Party have begun to submit their lists to the Electoral Court, a little less than a month before the national elections scheduled for October 27. One of the features that has drawn attention is the inclusion of the president’s image Luis Lacalle Pou in various lists. This decision has been formalized after the party’s presidential candidate, Álvaro Delgado, announced his running mate during the internal elections, where the figure of the president stood out.
The inclusion strategy of the image of Lacalle Pou It has been implemented in various lists to the Senate. Javier Garciasenator and representative of Country Alliancewhich is made up of several groups, has recently shared the design of its list that features a photograph of the president, taken on the day of his inauguration on March 1, 2020. García holds the role of Lacalle’s first substitute on this list, which that reinforces his closeness and alignment with the president.
Unified design in the National Party lists
Another relevant member of the National Partydeputy Martín Lema, has also opted for a similar proposal with his Fresh Air list (404)which features the same image of Lacalle Pou in its design. Lema is in a prominent position as the president’s first Senate substitute in this group. This tendency to use the image of Lacalle Pou seems to reflect an attempt by the sectors to consolidate a message of continuity and associate themselves with the presidential figure.
In the context of these decisions, the group Por la Patria, led by senator Jorge Gandinihas carried out a similar strategy by including the president’s photograph in its list. This election raises the question about the impact this considerable visual link with Lacalle Pou will have on the electorate, especially at a time when elections are just around the corner.
Adjustments in other sectors of the National Party
While some sectors of the National Party advance in defining their lists, in National Unity, which was born from the coalition between Herrerismo and the group under the leadership of Senator Juan Sartori, the process has been slower. Sources consulted have indicated that there are still some places to be defined within the lists, although the inclusion of several relevant names has been confirmed. Among them, Luis Alberto Heber stands out, who will be Lacalle Pou’s first substitute, as well as Senator Rodrigo Blás, who is in a strategic position on the list.
It is also decided that Sartori will take second place on the list that will contain images of the president, as well as other key members of the party such as Álvaro Delgado and Valeria Ripoll. The preparation of these lists reflects the complexity and dynamism of the groups in the search to configure the best possible representation before the voters.
One of the most relevant surprises in the sectors of the National Party is found in the group The future is from the Center, where it has been agreed that the mayor of Paysandú, Nicolás Olivera, will lead the list in which Lacalle is the holder. In turn, Vice President Beatriz Argimón will occupy a prominent position as second incumbent and Senator Gloria Rodríguez will advance as first alternate, thus consolidating significant representation from different regions of the country.
The use of Lacalle Pou’s image in the PN lists
The use of Lacalle Pou’s image has transcended the Senate lists and has been part of other communication efforts within the party. Recently, a new advertising spot titled “The blue sky again”, which highlights the works and efforts carried out during the administration of the right-wing government.
Álvaro Delgado, when asked about its content, stated: “There are images where I am, as Secretary of the Presidency, with the president. They are few and the president is not campaigning”.
