Mexican authorities said on Thursday that they intercepted in the last 24 hours more than a thousand migrants of 33 nationalities, at a time when the government is trying to stop the undocumented entry of people and has imposed visas on visitors from several Latin American countries.
The National Migration Institute (INM) said that the migrants, of which 10% were minors and many of them traveling alonewere located in operations in 22 states of the country.
“In the last 24 hours, the National Institute of Migration rescued 1,266 migrants (…) from different continents and were traveling irregularly,” the INM said in a statement.
The agency identified 741 men and 322 women, as well as 203 minors, mostly from Colombia, Cuba, GuatemalaHonduras and The Savior.
However, he added that other migrants also came from countries like AfghanistanArmenia, Canada, ChinaEthiopia, Ghana, Italy, Pakistan, Somalia, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, among others.
Recently the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said in January the number of nationalities of migrants crossing Mexico increasedfor which he urged the authorities to offer various schemes for his regularization in the country, in addition to asylum.
In recent years the number of migrants fleeing violence, poverty and other problems in their nations has skyrocketed, but many of them must wait up to a year in southern Mexico for permission from authorities to cross the nation without being detained before reaching the United States.
