The National Historical Museum (MHN), in Praça Marechal Âncora, in the historic center of the city of Rio de Janeiro, will be closed to the public for modernization work on the electrical system, starting this Monday (9). The renovation is expected to be completed in October 2025.
“Over the next few months, we will publicize our communication, education and research programs and actions that will guarantee the continuation of our work and services”, says text published in institution website.
The objective, according to the institution’s management, is to implement an air conditioning project for the exhibition areas, which will provide greater comfort for people who will visit, as well as offering better conservation conditions for the collections.
According to the MHN, the initiative will provide more security, sustainability and efficiency to the National Historical Museum, ensuring the continuity and improvement of services offered to today’s citizens and future generations of Brazilians who find the institution a reference space for recognition and appreciation. of national diversity, memory and identity.
Inauguration
Created in August 1922, focused on the history of Brazil, the museum occupies the entire architectural complex of the old Ponta do Calabouço, becoming one of the most important historical museums in the country and a center that generates knowledge in the areas of museology and heritage. cultural.
It housed the first Museology course in the country, created in 1932, and which operated on the museum’s premises until 1977, becoming a reference for the establishment of other important Brazilian museums.
Another important institution that began at the National Historical Museum was the Inspectorate of National Monuments, created in 1934, which later became the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan).
The entire architectural complex and collections of the MHN were listed in 2009 by Iphan.
