The Government of Colombia created the Vice Ministry of Migration, Consular Affairs and International Protection, which will focus on serving its citizens abroad, the Foreign Ministry reported this Wednesday.
“The creation of the vice-ministry is in tune with the global needs and requirements regarding migration, protection and support of the Colombian State to residents abroad.“, detailed the Foreign Ministry in a statement.

Among the tasks of the The new entity is responsible for managing initiatives, projects and strategies aimed at strengthening the social fabric. and promote activities among the six million Colombians who are estimated to live outside the country.
It must also develop programs to link and participate with the national diaspora in activities and business, cultural, academic, research and technological development and innovation projects.

To fulfill its functions, the vice-ministry will rely on two new directorates: the Directorate of Policy, Migration Affairs and International Protection, and the Directorate of Consular Services, Diaspora Linkage and Return.
This decision, explained the Government, responds to the need to unify in a single instance the immigration policy, consular services and the international protection of both Colombian citizens and foreigners in the country.
