From the Vatican, Rome, the Venezuelan delegation was at the canonization ceremony of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles, carried out by Pope Leo XIV. Representation that also celebrated on behalf of the Venezuelan people the official recognition of the first saints of the Latin American country.
“From Rome, from St. Peter’s Square, filled with jubilant parishioners, we celebrate with emotion the canonization of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles,” said the Sectoral Vice President of Science, Technology, Education and Health, Gabriela Jiménez, who headed the Venezuelan representation in the Holy See.
Jiménez thanked the late Pope Francis for making this historic day possible, which “not only sanctifies two of his servants, but deeply honors the faith of an entire people.”
«Venezuela unites today in love, joy and peace. We recognize in Dr. José Gregorio Hernández a man who gave his life for the sick, the suffering and the excluded, at the same time serving science through medicine. And we see in Mother Carmen Rendiles the model of the Venezuelan woman who overcomes adversity through education and the tireless work of social service, being a pioneer of the Servant of Jesus Congregation,” she highlighted.
Likewise, Vice President Gabriela Jiménez valued the faith and support of President Nicolás Maduro, “who has accompanied this process with conviction, celebrating with the people this great work of holiness that fills us with hope today.”
For her part, the mayor of Caracas, Carmen Meléndez, greeted the ecclesiastical authorities who participated “in this very important moment for Venezuela and the world.”
“The holiness of our doctor José Gregorio Hernández and our mother Carmen Rendiles was universally recognized,” said the local leader, exalting the new saints as “examples of sacrifice, love of neighbor, kindness, equity and devotion.”
The national delegation, present in Vatican City, is also made up of the Vice Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs for Europe and North America, Andrea Corao, and the Minister of People’s Power for Women and Gender Equality, Yelitze Santaella.
This Sunday, October 19, at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV offered a Eucharist before thousands of faithful present and millions who watched around the world to canonize a total of seven saints, including the two Venezuelans.
