Alice
Who died at the age of 98 in 2019, Alicia Alonso dedicated her life to ballet, with a solid training as a dancer and her own style.
He had one of the longest careers in dance that we remember, in which he combined, through talent and perseverance, the rigor of interpretation, choreography, and direction of the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC).
October 28, 1948 was a key date in the artist’s career, when she founded the Alicia Alonso Ballet in Havana, together with the brothers Fernando and Alberto Alonso, the first of its kind created on the island.
In it, Alicia took dance art to one of its highest expressions to deserve the title of Prima ballerina assoluta and cemented an internationally recognized style.
Throughout its history, the BNC has stood out for the artistic-technical rigor of its dancers and a line with a predominance of the romantic and classical tradition.
In 2018 it was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation for being “the highest expression of the Cuban school of ballet”, a condition extended to the company’s repertoire, its image archive, objects and documents related to the institution.
