Zuliana Lainezpresident of the National Association of Journalists (ANP), described as “cynicism” the Presidency’s congratulations to journalists on Journalist’s Day.
“We have read the Presidency’s congratulatory Twitter, and it seems to us to be a display of absolute cynicism,” he said.
In that sense, the journalist pointed out that those who practice the profession have suffered not only from the president Dina Boluartebut also of the ministers of State.
Lainez mentioned the case of a journalist to whom the Minister of the Interior, Juan José Santiváñez, told him that he was going to explain “with apples” what citizen security is.
“We believe that this is inadmissible in a democratic environment. Notarial letters from their ministers, the audios that are known. A disdain for the work of journalists,” he said.
The journalist revealed that, from January 1 to date, 251 attacks against journalists have been reported: “Several of them, unfortunately encouraged and carried out by those who hold public responsibility.”
And that’s not all. He warned that Congress has also contributed to these cases of intimidation against journalists: “Congress does not miss the opportunity to try to legislate against journalistic activity, to muzzle the activity.”
He requested that the Public Ministry apply the measures proportionally: “We do not say that journalists have corona, but there has to be proportionality”:
Finally, he assured that lifting the secrecy of communications could violate the secrecy of journalists’ sources.
