National Assembly swears in Larry Davoe as attorney general (e) and Tarek William Saab as defender (e)

This Wednesday, the National Assembly appointed human rights lawyer Larry Daniel Devoe as attorney general and Tarek William Saab as ombudsman, both of whom held these positions.

The president of the AN, Jorge Rodríguez, announced the resignation of Tarek William as attorney general and declared that in accordance with the constitutional procedure, Parliament must form a nomination committee and, in the meantime, a person in charge will be designated for the vacancy.

After finishing the ordinary session in which the Venezuelan Red Cross Law was unanimously approvedthe board of the National Assembly met in the Los Escudos hall, where the officials were sworn in.

First, the president of the AN swore in lawyer Larry Davoe, as attorney general in charge, who expressed:

«I swear to comply with the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the Organic Law of the Public Ministry and other laws related to the exercise of the function of the Public Ministry. I swear to work tirelessly to help consolidate a high-quality justice system for our people. A justice system that leaves behind the writings, the discrimination that it has historically inherited. A justice system that recognizes and makes clear the postulate recognized in article 26 of our Constitution, I swear accordingly,” he expressed.

Next, Rodríguez proceeded to swear in Tarek William Saab, who expressed:

«I swear, in the name of a Constitution that in its title 3, which speaks of human rights, duties and constitutional guarantees, which we coordinate as president of that commission in the Constituent Assembly, to draft together with the Popular Movement of this country and the National Human Rights Movement, to live up to it again, an important responsibility, which we assumed during an extremely difficult time during the years 2015, 2016 and some months of 2017. I swear that the epic that we had to fulfill with dignity and honor as Attorney General of the Republic to maintain democratic coexistence, peace, in the face of aggressions never seen in the recent history of our country, where we were able to see how in that period in which we had to assume the Public Ministry, we had to face foreign aggressions, assassination attempts, maritime incursions, mercenary style such as Operation Gideon, coup attempts such as the one in April 2019, attempted drone attack, August 4 2018, among many other actions that at the right time, safeguarding the republican peace, we managed to maintain. Furthermore, I would like, citizen president, Jorge Rodríguez, to praise the work of the officials who have accompanied us during that time to create unprecedented programs in the history of the Public Ministry, programs to care for girls, boys, women, the elderly, the defense of pets, which I swear we will continue to carry out through the mandate of the Ombudsman’s Office. “I swear,” he said.

Appointment of the Preliminary Evaluation Committee.

During this Wednesday’s ordinary session, following the announcement by the president of the Venezuelan parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, of the resignations of the attorney general of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, and the ombudsman, Alfredo Ruizthe AN approved the appointment of the Preliminary Evaluation Committee.

This collegiate body will have the responsibility of initiating the process for the selection of the new positions of Attorney General of the Republic and Ombudsman.

The parliamentary body will be chaired by deputy Giuseppe Alessandrello, who will coordinate the work of this multidisciplinary team made up of parliamentarians of various political tendencies, to guarantee compliance with legal lapses.

The immediate mission of this Preliminary Committee will be to advance the formation of the Nominations Committee, which will be responsible for receiving, evaluating and selecting the profiles of citizens who aspire to lead the Attorney General’s Office and the Ombudsman’s Office.
