The National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) reported this Thursday that it reduced the sessions scheduled for next week to one day, and by videoconference, due to “the complex situation in the country.”
The announcement comes one day after that made by the Communist Party, which rescheduled its plenary session to one day from the two initially planned.
The PCC meeting was scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, but the Secretary of Organization of the political party, Roberto Morales, announced on social networks that it would only be held on Saturday and by videoconference, “taking into account the complex situation that the country is experiencing.”
The partisan plenary session is key because its decisions are those that are later adopted in the ANPP sessions, which are usually held days later and unanimously support the PCC proposals.
As announced this day, only the plenary session of Parliament will meet on the 18th as planned, except for the meetings of the working committees that begin three days before.
The last time parliamentary sessions were completely suspended was in July 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Complex” situation
Among other topics, the meetings of the PCC and the Cuban Parliament must evaluate the “Government Program to correct distortions and re-boost the economy,” a set of reforms and savings measures in the face of the serious crisis affecting the island.
The agenda of the deputies, most of whom are active in the ranks of the PCC, includes the analysis and discussion of the draft State Budget Law for the year 2026, according to the Parliament website.
The days prior to these meetings have been marked by a considerable increase in blackouts, with almost 20 continuous hours in several regions, including Havana, as a reflection of the serious energy crisis that the country is going through.
Added to this is the current epidemic outbreak of dengue and chikungunya, with thousands of cases detected, severe symptoms, an unfavorable prognosis in the short term and, to date, at least 44 deaths, two-thirds of them minors.
The announcements by the PCC and the ANPP occur on the same day as the publication of a series of regulations that make the use of foreign currencies on the island official, thus formalizing the growing dollarization promoted by the Executive.
