With this new drone unit, the Army strengthens its surveillance and response capacity against today’s challenges and threats.
News Colombia.
At the Tolemaida Military Fort, the engines, insignia and pride of the men and women of the National Army came together to celebrate a historic event: the 30 years of the Aviation Weapon. But the date was not only marked by the memory of three decades of service, but by an announcement that projects the Colombian Army into the future: the creation of the Unmanned Aircraft Battalion (BANOT).
This new military component was presented in a ceremony presided over by General Luis Emilio Cardozo Santamaría, commander of the National Army.

Modern conflict is no longer fought solely on land. Today’s operations demand speed, precision and technological capacity, and that is where BANOT comes into the picture. Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Jorge Ernesto Patiño Camargo, this unit will be made up of four specialized companies and will have its command post in Boyacá, a strategic location that will allow it to operate in different parts of the country.
Each company will fulfill a key function: from reconnaissance with multirotor aircraft to operations with fixed-wing drones, through electronic countermeasures and specialized maintenance. Together, they form an autonomous and robust response system that will allow the Army to act with greater intelligence and security.
Technology at the service of defense
Beyond modernization, BANOT symbolizes a transformation in the way the country is protected. According to the Army, the use of unmanned aircraft will enhance reconnaissance, surveillance, air support and special operations control missions, reducing risks for personnel and increasing precision in strategic decisions.

These capabilities also reinforce cooperation between different Army arms, consolidating a model of integrated operations in which technology and tactics work hand in hand.
The fact of locating the BANOT command in Boyacá is not coincidental. This department will become a nerve center for the development of new military tools, thanks to its geographical position and the ideal conditions for the operation of unmanned aircraft.
From there, missions will be coordinated throughout the national territory, promoting a surveillance and reconnaissance network that will strengthen the country’s security from the air.
