The Academy issued a bulletin after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox an International Public Health Emergency by the progressive irruption of 16 thousand cases in 75 countries.
In this sense, the National Academy of Medicine recommends declaring a health alarm that allows mobilizing resources and taking action, in the face of monkeypox, “in collaboration with civil society and with strict adherence to respect for human rights.”

In addition, the Academy calls for ensuring transparency “in the handling of information with due respect for privacy”, strengthening the capacity for molecular diagnosis and genetic monitoring of the monkeypox virus and develop active epidemiological surveillance programs, including in sexually transmitted infection clinics.
For the Academy, given the advance of smallpox, it is urgent to begin the appropriate steps to guarantee future access to antivirals and vaccines against monkeypox.
The body called for “acting vigorously to prevent the spread” of monkeypox.
