With the vote of Morena and its allies and the claim of the opponents, the Senate yesterday approved the shortlist made up of Rosario Piedra Ibarra, Nashieli Ramírez Hernández and Paulina Hernández Diz, from which the person who presides over the National Human Rights Commission will be chosen. (CNDH) for the period 2025-2029.

It was intended to pass the shortlist to the plenary session yesterday and vote on it in a second afternoon session, but given that in Morena they had not reached an agreement, since one party is promoting the re-election of Piedra Ibarra and another is in favor of the new ombudsperson be Nashieli Hernández, it was decided to postpone the discussion until next week.

During the meeting of the Human Rights and Justice commissions, legislators from the PAN, PRI and MC protested the fact that Piedra Ibarra had been included in the shortlist. They maintained that she was one of the worst qualified, she ranked last, but the majority of Morena and allies came to her defense and the ruling was approved with 20 votes in favor and nine against.

PAN members Ricardo Anaya, Laura Esquivel and Verónica Rodríguez insisted that Piedra Ibarra was elected five years ago fraudulently and they maintained that instead of the victims, he defended the Morena government. Together with PRI senator Claudia Anaya, they demanded clarification as to why he was included in the shortlist.

The president of the Justice Commission, Javier Corral Jurado, explained that it was decided to choose three candidates from a total of 47 candidates with a first selection of 12 people and after an evaluation with the parliamentary coordinators five highly qualified profiles emerged.

In first place, he said, was Nashieli Ramírez Hernández, in second Tania Ramírez Hernández, in third Paulina Hernández Diz, in fourth Carla Alejandra Obregón and in fifth Carlos Pérez Vazquez.

Corral Jurado explained that the members of the Human Rights Commission decided that instead of the activist and academic Tania Ramírez, the human rights defender Paulina Hernández Diz would appear on the shortlist.

Regarding the inclusion of Piedra Ibarra, he argued that It is not only about obtaining the most suitable and best evaluated profilesbut also to achieve the greatest political consensus to make the decisions viable.

They had to listen, he explained, to 22 of the 30 members of the two ruling commissions. We cannot ignore such a political consensus either..

A social organization called Designaciones uploaded a table to the networks with the qualifications of 12 candidates and the last place is occupied by Piedra Ibarra, with one point, a version to which not even the opposition gave validity.

Morenoist legislators defended the work of Rosario Piedra. Malú Micher reproached PRI and PAN members for having dedicated themselves to denigrate and belittle his work at the CNDH.

The Senate board of directors introduced the shortlist, which will be voted on in next Tuesday’s session.
