Narváez’s appointment is imposed by the president Dina Boluarte. Meanwhile, the Ministers of Economy, José Arista, and of Energy and Mines, Rómulo Mucho, advocated for a technical and non-political board president.

Along with the new president, four directors were appointed:

  • Alejandro Narváez Liceras – Independent director.
  • Roberto James McDonald Zapff – Independent Director.
  • Carlos Alberto Lezameta Escribens – Non-independent Director.
  • David Quispe Figueroa – Non-Independent Director.
  • César Rodríguez Villanueva – Independent Director

Sources of Peru21 They confirmed that two members of the board of directors had resigned this morning after the appointment. The resignations are Roberto James McDonald Zapff and Carlos Alberto Lezameta Escribns.

Political appointment

Narváez ran for Congress in 2021, with the Together for Peru party, which had Verónika Mendoza as its presidential candidate. His ideological tendency has led him to say that “the true contribution of mining is a mockery.”

Currently, the new president of the Petroperú board is affiliated with JPP, the party of former Castilla minister Roberto Sánchez, who is an ally of Antauro Humala.

Narváez is no stranger to Petroperú, he was president of the company’s board of directors between 2003 and 2005. However, the now official was critical of the restructuring of the oil company in the face of the million-dollar losses it reports. In that sense, he opposed the restructuring plan of the consulting firm Arthur D. Little and assured that its conclusions are wrong.

Likewise, he spoke out against the hiring of an international manager (PMO), arguing that in the country there are experts with better knowledge in business management.

These positions meant that, upon being announced as chairman of the board in September, three members of Oliver Stark’s board declined to remain in office.
