Napoleón Gómez Urrutia: AGT: worker unity, new future

AND

On October 20, we formally and democratically established the General Association of Workers (AGT) and, with it, the labor movement in Mexico takes on renewed momentum. This association brings together the strongest and most important labor unions in the country, such as the National Union of Miners, which I am honored to preside over, the Union of Telephone Operators of the Mexican Republic, the National Federation of Banking Unions, the workers of the Metro and Monte de Piedad Collective Transport, as well as the Mexican Regional Workers Conference (CROM), the Revolutionary Confederations of Workers and Peasants (CROC) and of Workers, Peasants and Employees of Mexico (Cocem).

The AGT was born with the purpose of being an instrument at the service of workers, a place where every voice is heard, every idea is considered, and every effort is valued, all of this in order to face the challenges of a constantly changing work environment. change, where phenomena such as globalization and automation have profoundly modified the relationship between the worker and their work environment. In this context, unity is not only an ideal, but a crucial strategy for strengthening labor rights and for vindicating and dignifying human work. This recently created labor union emerged to unify the different sectors of the working class into a solid, determined front in tune with the demands for dignity, justice, respect and equity that the country needs.

This unit is not a concession; It is a historical necessity that strengthens us and guides us to move forward.

The mission of the AGT is not only to preserve earned labor rights, but also to establish a union and labor model that promotes tangible progress in the standard of living of each worker and their families. This means fighting for fair wages, adequate working conditions and legislation that responds to the realities of the working class. In this sense, we have committed to promoting structural changes in the workplace, defending the right to decent work and confronting the persistent inequalities that still affect millions of Mexican families.

One of the central proposals of the AGT is to consolidate a unionism that, in addition to being combative, is capable of establishing direct bridges with the government and institutions, because we know that only together will we achieve lasting and favorable changes for all. We cannot forget that our struggle is not an isolated conflict, we must promote with dialogue and respect some reforms that are still pending, such as the reduction of working hours, the chair law, the 30-day bonus, tax deduction for overtime, housing decent and pension fund.

This is a collaboration model that understands the government as a potential ally, not as an adversary. Without a doubt, we are faced with a historic opportunity: to build a shared agenda. Nothing without workers, everything must be based on human rights, social justice and the collective prosperity of those who produce the wealth of our nation.

The resurgence of the labor movement through the AGT is an unwavering commitment to every Mexican worker. With hope and determination, the AGT looks to the future, seeking to consolidate a model of unionism that combines the tradition of struggle with a modern vision of structural change and equity. The history of our country has shown that great advances in social justice arise from the strength and unity of its workers; Today, this promise lives on.

It is also a reminder that workers’ rights must not only be defended, but expanded and renewed. The General Association of Workers marks the beginning of a new historical stage in which workers, united and organized, can look with hope towards a future in which work is valued, respected and is a source of dignity and pride. for everyone.

This is our time, the right moment to write a chapter of renewal and strength, in which the future of the labor movement is in our hands. The fight is just beginning, but today we are stronger, we are more united and more determined than ever to defend labor justice and build a better Mexico for all.
