“I have had no greater official honor than to speak for the citizens of San Francisco and I will continue to do so as a member of the House of Representatives, serving the great state of California and defending our Constitution, but I will not seek re-election to leadership” said the 82-year-old congresswoman.
Nancy Pelosi is the first and only woman to preside over the House of Representatives in US history. According to a dispatch from EFE, The congresswoman noted:It is time for a new generation to lead the “Democratic caucus” in Congress.

In her speech this Thursday, Pelosi said that, in January 2023, when the new US Congress is installed, after the midterm elections on November 8, there will be many congressmen who will want to preside over it.
Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that she will not seek re-election as Speaker of the House of Representatives comes after it was confirmed that the conservatives regained control of the House of Representatives by already securing 218 of the 435 seats in contention, the minimum required to enjoy of the majority.
In the Senate, the Democrats retain power with half of the 100 seats and the tie-breaking vote of the vice president, Kamala Harris, so from January the leadership of Congress will be divided between both parties.
Pelosi has been leading the Democrats in the US Lower House for two decades. On November 7, she said that the attack suffered by her husband, at the end of October at the family home in San Francisco (California), affected her decision about her future.
