The veteran American politician Nancy Pelosi, emblematic figure of the Democratic Party and first woman to preside over the House of Representatives, announced this Thursday that He will not seek re-election at the end of his current term in January 2027, ending 40 years of public service.
“I will not run for reelection to Congress. (…) With gratitude, I look forward to my last year of service as your proud representative,” said Pelosi, 85, in an emotional video posted on social media.
Pelosi’s decision clears up the speculation that had circulated in recent weeks about her political future, the agency said. EFE.
Your announcement also comes two days after important Democratic victories in several states, including Virginia, New Jersey and New Yorkas well as the approval in California of an electoral redistribution measure favorable to his party for the 2026 legislative elections.

During her message, Pelosi highlighted her bond with the citizens of San Francisco, to whom she wanted to first address the news of her retirement.
“I always say to my colleagues in the House of Representatives, no matter what title they have given me — speaker, leader, caucus coordinator — that there has been no greater honor for me than to stand on the House floor and say, ‘I speak for the people of San Francisco,’” she said.
The former Democratic leader also took the opportunity to send a message to her hometown, in a political context in which foresees greater challenges against Republican President Donald Trump:
“San Francisco, recognize your power. We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way, and now we must continue to do so by participating fully in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals that we hold so dear,” he stressed.

Nancy Pelosi: four decades of history in Congress
First elected as representative in 1987, Pelosi broke the glass ceiling two decades later by become the first woman to hold the presidency of the Lower House, a position she resumed in 2019during Trump’s first term.
His career is marked by some of the most tense moments in recent US politics, including his central role in the impeachment process against Trump after the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, an event for which he held the president directly responsible.
Although she resigned from her party’s leadership in the House in 2022, Pelosi has maintained an influential presence within the Democratic bloc, where she continues to be one of the most respected and heard voices.
