Talking with Nancy González is a real delight, not only because of her passion for her profession, but also because of her enormous commitment to Cuban culture in its different expressions.
The renowned actress is on the list of the most versatile interpreters in Cuba, and has shown during her career that she dominates theater, film and television with a high note, disciplines in which she has accumulated great successes.
With a considerable career behind her, Nancy has seduced the public with her personality and has left her mark on dozens of characters that have permeated the popular memory of Cubans. We talked with her.
How has been the path to build your career?
It has been a difficult path, like everything in life, but at the same time it is very gratifying when you see that you manage to achieve the objectives that you set for yourself. Is [la actuación] It is a profession that requires a lot of sacrifice and looking back I know that it has been worth having dedicated myself to this artistic manifestation.
At some point I came to wonder what I was going to do, because I had high qualifications to study other professions and I aspired to be a researcher, but to some extent fate insisted that acting cross my path. Being in the pre-university stage, some recruiting is done at my school and that is where they told me for the first time that I had the conditions for this career.
Are you born knowing that you are going to dedicate yourself to the world of acting?
It is said that in Cuba we have the soul of artists, because we are witty and we take advantage of all the situations that come our way in life.
In my case, from an early age everything related to art caught my attention, I sang in the neighborhood and at school, recited poetry. Being a shy person, I was able to unfold myself through art and do certain things that before the same barrier of shyness did not allow me to develop.
Did you expect to have this successful career when director Daniel Díaz gave you your first role in the movie jíbaro?
Since I started in this artistic world, I always aspired to do a decent job in any medium in which I had to work. Being in the Matanzas Drama Theater Group, which later became “El Mirón Cubano” gave me the opportunity to be part of the cast of this film, in which I had the good fortune to rub shoulders with greats like Salvador Wood and René de the cross.
Although at that time I was on the path to developing as an actress, I remember this experience as something special that gave me visibility so that other directors could refer to my work.
I have always enjoyed all the opportunities that have been presented to me and I have given my all so that the projects in which I have participated go ahead and are well received by the public.
Were the nineties “golden” for you?
I had the opportunity to join the cast of several productions that were made in that decade, dramatized that were very well received by our people and that are remembered to this day. Recently some of these telenovelas have been broadcast and I have once again evoked those years in which great works of Cuban television were carried out.
During that time, you worked with great colleagues. Are you more seduced by a great actor or by a person who, perhaps being an average actor, is a great partner for you?
At that stage I met professionals of the highest level; many of them did not go through academies and yet they taught acting. be in the same set With these figures it was to learn a little of his mastery every day and it was a privilege that I took advantage of and from which I nourished myself.
It is very good to have chemistry with the people with whom you are going to work for a long period, when there is a good relationship the public notices it and that allows the product to have the highest bill possible.
There is usually a debate among artists when talking about academic studies, are they necessary to be an actor/actress?
In all professions it is important to have the theory to later put it into practice, what I do believe is that the resources provided by the academy should continue to be developed in practice. Knowledge does not take up space and gives you a wide baggage when it comes to building a character and representing a play.
But I also tell you that there are people who are empirical and show their acting quality and have that “angel” that is needed in this profession. The important thing is to do a good job that contributes to you as a professional and that is well received by the people who follow your work.
Although lately we don’t see you so often in our media, you are an actress very loved by Cubans, what is your working method to achieve that closeness with the public?
Dedicating myself to the profession, being sincere and transparent in everything I do has been what has characterized me since I started in this career. I demand a lot from myself in everything I do and I like that the people around me are dedicated and disciplined with their work, because this is a manifestation in which we depend on specialists from other disciplines.
I have always tried to stay close to our people and to reciprocate that affection that the public gives me by being a better professional every day, in that effort I work every day of my life.
Documenting myself for this interview, I have seen that you have received several of the most important recognitions that are given in our country. Do you think that these awards have weight or that they open doors?
Although it is often said that one does not work for awards, it is comforting that both a specialized jury and the audience recognize your career, identify with you and patent it through an award. Receiving awards is something that stimulates you, but it also commits you to keep working with quality so that your work is sustainable over time.
She is an actress, businesswoman, event organizer. When you fill out a form, what do you put as a cover letter?
I consider myself an artist in every sense of the word, and I try to leave my mark on everything I do, whether it’s acting in a drama or when it comes to designing the program for a recreational activity.
Everything we do is related to art because to conceive a show you have to have dedication and exquisiteness so that everything turns out as the protagonists of the events dreamed.
Is versatility the key in this race?
In life, as in the artistic world, people who master several arts have more chances of being inserted in a work project.
This is a job that requires a lot of preparation, both physical and psychological, in which you always have to be creating to stay visible. From my experience, you have to be constant and be prepared for when an opportunity presents itself to be able to take advantage of it.
What makes you still have the need to go on stage?
Motivation and passion remain intact; Despite the fact that I have been in this medium for several years, I still feel the same need to express my emotions through acting.
What would you like someone you’ve spent an afternoon chatting with to say about you?
I would like you to highlight my human side and refer to me as a woman who is passionate about everything she does, who is constantly creating and who is always looking for new goals.
