On Sociologist’s Day, the Ministry of Education, together with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, presented the Raúl Leis Romero award to Nadya Vásquez, for her extensive national and international experience in promoting public policies focused on equity and human rights. .
This recognition is granted, every two years by the Panamanian State, through Law 53 of November 1, 2016, to sociologists who, in their professional lives, have stood out for their studies on Panamanian society and the different phenomena that in she occur.
Nadya Vásquez Ureña, mentioned in her speech that after the COVID-19 pandemic, natural and social sciences must go hand in hand and that women lead this effort for transformation and peace.
“Sociology arises in the minds of the 18th and 19th century philosophers to respond to the problems of society and the aspirations for change. The responsibility for the critical analysis of discrimination, racism and xenophobia is exercised by this discipline. My work from Unicef gave me the opportunity to influence legislation and public policy in favor of the most humble, “he said.
The selection of the winner was made on November 18 with the participation of the National Commission made up of Carmen Contreras from the Ministry of Culture, Raúl López Andrea from the Council of Rectors, Teófila Castillo representing the Ministry of Education, Alonso Ramos from the University de Panamá and Theojaris A. Bethancourt A. on behalf of the Technical Council of Sociology.
