In a conversation with EL TIEMPO, the young man’s mother, who lives in the Villa Lisa neighborhood of Suba, said that she received the news of the accident from a nurse at the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center hospital.
The nurse informed him that his son, José Ricardo, had arrived at the hospital with a bullet in his head and that he would undergo emergency surgery to remove it.
According to the mother, José Ricardo was in his room when he was shot. “I received a call from a lady who took him to the hospital. She mentioned that it was a stray bullet, but I have no further information, since the police have not contacted me,” she explained, visibly distressed.
The woman, in tears, asked for help from the Foreign Ministry or the embassy to be able to travel to the United States. “My son is alone there and I don’t have the resources to go. I am desperate and I only ask for help,” she said.
José Ricardo had arrived in Houston a year ago with the goal of improving his quality of life and supporting his mother in Colombia. He had found work in a lumber company and had recently found employment in a construction company.
“He was very happy with his progress and had already started the process to obtain a work visa,” said his mother.
The family is waiting for news about the status of the surgery, scheduled for three o’clock on Wednesday afternoon. “I was told that the operation is very delicate and that the condition in which my son arrived at the hospital was not stable,” the mother concluded.
