From 00:00 this Thursday, the workers of the Mutún steel plant They will block the Bioceanic highway, which connects Santa Cruz with the Brazilian border. The employees decided to radicalize their measure when entering their fourth day of unemployment due to the fact that the Chinese company Sinosteel does not attend to their demand to improve the salary scale.
The executive secretary of the Central Obrera Regional (COR) of Germán Busch province, Gilbert Córdova, explained that the blockade was agreed upon in a workers’ assembly, because from Monday to this Wednesday they had no response from the directors of Sinosteel, the company in charge of executing the Mutún project.
Córdova clarified that the strike and blockade measure is not being carried out against the exploitation of the Mutún, in Puerto Suárez, but rather as a defense of the rights of employees, who need to earn a fair wageoras he denounced that salaries are below the minimum established in the country.
“They want to pay a national minimum wage (Bs 2,164) to technicians, imagine that for a professional with academic training and work experience they intend to set a categorization whose maximum limit reaches Bs 6,000 (…). Let’s exploit the Mutún, not the Bolivian worker”, he indicated.
For his part, Franz Ulloa, one of the Sinosteel employees, commented that the lock will be installed from 00:00 this Thursday on the route to Brazil. He added that with the stoppage of functions they seek to improve the salary scale of all workers.
A few days ago, the president of the Empresa Siderúrgica Mutún (ESM), Jorge Alvarado, lamented that this situation had to be reached, since The measure delays the progress of works. However, he specified that in everything that refers to labor law, the ESM helped to ensure that it is fulfilled.
The executive considers that the issue of the salary scale it is a negotiation between the workers and the contractor. He hopes an agreement is reached and the works can continue.
