One Mutirão promoted by the Rio de Janeiro State Environment Institute (INEA) in partnership with the NGO Somos Nature identified solid waste in Ilha Grande from China, Argentina and Ethiopia. Among them, pet bottles and tea packaging.

“These waste is incorrectly discarded and end up finding our water bodies. Whether a river or a lagoon. This happens all over the world. We have real solid waste islands in the ocean. Often, these waste is detached from these islands come to our beaches and in much of the coastal of the country,” said the engineer.
Between July 13 and 16, 242 kg of recyclable materials that arrived at the beaches were removed through sea currents. The work is done manually and with the support of tools such as mechanical and ecopeneira hand. The team organized the material and took it to Angra dos Reis recyclable cooperatives.

Lixes like plastic and glass bring risks to local biodiversity. Plastic can be ingested by turtles and sea birds, causing suffocation and death. Glass residues can take more than 4,000 years to decompose in the environment.
“The feeling we have is that these waste is increasingly constant and bring more and more damage to our fauna. Yes. We realize a significant increase in waste. I can make how many operations it is necessary and I will remove at least one ton or 500kg of waste with each operation, depending on the amount of people at work,” said Cleber Ferreira.
THE Partnership between INEA and SOME NATURE provides monthly joint efforts on the beaches of Ilha Grande. The idea is for volunteers to actively participate in the actions. Last weekend’s activity had tourists from Sao Paulo, Spain, Argentina, Spain and Iceland.

“We have no control over what comes to Rio de Janeiro from other countries, but we act directly on the collection and allocation of these waste that appear in our conservation units. It is gratifying to see also visitors integrating our conservation mission,” said Bernardo Rossi.
Conservation unit
THE Praia do Sul State Biological Reserve is a conservation unit that covers 3,309.63 hectares. It covers part of the areas of the end of the stairs, hill of pestle, Araçatiba Serra, Serra do Papagaio, Tucunduba and the beach of Praia do Sul.
The reserve has as its mission to preserve biodiversity and archaeological sites. According to Inea, She is the only one in the state of Rio de Janeiro that has all coastal ecosystems. Because it is a biological reserve, recreational visitation on site is not allowed. Only scientific research and environmental education activities are authorized.
