Murillo: "The priests and bishops rang the bells for the vandals to come out to kill"

The deputy dictator of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, once again thundered and launched her virulent attacks against the Catholic Church, its priests and bishop. In her noon litany, through her propaganda media, the spokeswoman for the regime assured that in 2018 the priests rang the church bells as an announcement for “the vandals to come out to kill.”

The truth is that the religious rang the church bells as an alarm signal when the Police and paramilitaries carried out attacks in various departments of the country. This action served to protect the population from the violent operations that ended the lives of dozens of young people in the so-called “Operation Cleanup.”

«No one wants in this country, which is blessed, to see again the disfigured, frightening, gloomy face of hatred and more so when that hatred is represented in figures that we have believed we saw throughout our lives as promoters of good, of love, of spiritual healing, we do not want to return to those terrible days when we clearly saw what was hidden behind so many masks of those who claimed to speak in the name of God, it is incredible, a face that called for panic and rejection”, Murillo expressed.

The second in command assured that “we do not want those faces, we repudiate those faces, for us Christ is love, Christ does not bless vandals, Christ does not bless terrorists, Christ does not bless murderers, genocidal ” .

«The priests and bishops rang the bells so that the vandals would come out to kill with the police stationed. They rang the bells, fingered the church bells. How sad all this, how painful, that’s why we say: neither forget nor repeat. Never again in Nicaragua will the right to live calmly, contently, progressing from our honest, integral work be violated, “he said.

«Where are those who rang the bells? Where are those who showed up at the ringing of the bells for the abominable crime scenes? They really earned the contempt of the entire Nicaraguan people and they are not Nicaraguans, they are stateless. They won’t come back,” she added.

The tensions between the Church and the regime date back to April 2018 when a popular revolt broke out -caused by controversial social security reforms- described as an attempted coup by Ortega, who forcibly neutralized them.

In that year Ortega assured that the Nicaraguan bishops, in the midst of the revolt, gave him an “ultimatum” for him to leave power in 24 hours, and after that meeting, as he said at the time: “we said that we had to recover peace, because in those days there was no peace in Nicaragua, what there was was terror, and the country was paralyzed”.

The government escalation against the Catholic Church reached Bishop Rolando Álvarez, a critic of Ortega, who was abducted at dawn on August 19, 2021 by police officers from the episcopal curia of the Diocese of Matagalpa, where he had been confined for 15 days.

The bishop’s civil and political rights were cut off; They took away his Nicaraguan nationality and he was sentenced to 26 years and four months in prison. He is confined in the cells of the National Penitentiary System, known as “La Modelo”, in Tipitapa, as one more common prisoner.
