This year, the Municipal Public Library will celebrate its 148th anniversary, precisely on July 28. However, many do not know the books and historical documents that are kept within its walls.
Located at 312 Álvarez Thomas Street, within the Municipal Athenaeum complex, it had 2025 a total of 121,830 queriesan incessant flow of citizens searching their shelves for answers to the present through the past.
This dynamism is complemented by a necessary technological adaptation: Its internet room receives between 40 and 50 users daily, guaranteeing that access to global information is a free and effective right for everyone.
BOOKS
They are at least 67,000 copies those that are housed in the facility and there are several texts in Mandarin Chinese, German, English, Italian, French and Latin. According to an information note from the provincial commune, the institution It treasures a special collection of 15 copies of the Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa.
There is also the newspaper archive with archives of El Peruano and the historic La Bolsa since 1847, as well as an invaluable jewel, such as “La Revista”, the first newspaper in the city, which remains as a testimony of the transition towards modernity, written on a typewriter.
The library serves Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, and the Saturdays from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm
