Municipal Council of Panama responds to the Open Cabildo request requested by organized civil society a month ago

This Tuesday morning, Luis Pinedo, from the Citizen Consultation Movement, went to the offices of the Municipal Council of Panama to withdraw the response to the Open Cabildo request, a request made by this group of citizens exactly a month ago.

In the document delivered by the councilors of the capital district, it is detailed that they are in the verification of citizens’ signatures with the Electoral Court, to later define the date on which the Open Town Hall will be held.

It should be noted that last Friday, April 29, the 30-day period that the councilors of the capital municipality had to respond to the memorial presented by Luis Pinedo, for the realization of said council, expired.

The general secretary of the Municipal Council of Panama, Manuel Jiménez, expressed on Radio Panama that the response was positive.

“We are verifying, first the signatures, since we found some that said San Miguelito, we are proceeding to send a note to the Electoral Court so that it can certify it, and immediately the president of the Council, Abdiel Sandoya, will expose the date of the Open Town Hall “, reported on Friday.

He stressed that they will comply with the entire process that the law says, regarding citizen consultations.

Jiménez indicated that the Citizen Consultation movement delivered 1,029 signatures, however, they found three signatures that said San Miguelito.

An open council is a public meeting that must have the participation of the mayor of Panama and the 26 representatives of the townships so that the issues proposed by the citizens can be addressed.

The questions made by citizens in the Open Town Hall must be answered five days after it is held.
