The former president Jose Mujica has shared the news of his health status with the media, revealing that the esophageal cancer that he suffers from has spread throughout his body. His purpose, at this moment, is to request that he be left alone while he says goodbye.
“I want to say goodbye to my colleagues and my compatriots“What I ask is that you leave me alone, that you don’t harass me with random interviews and nothing more,” he said in an interview with the weekly Search.
Mujica, known for his direct nature, shows a firm desire not to undergo further medical treatments. In his statements he mentions that “the cancer in the esophagus is colonizing my liver.”
Furthermore, he expresses his opinion about his condition: “I don’t stop it with anything. Because? Because I am an old man and because I have two chronic diseases”. His perspective on medicine is clear, as he has decided not to continue with treatments that his body could not handle.
Confusion over his possible role in the government
During the same interview, Mujica also refers to the confusion generated about his possible participation in the new government of Yamandu Orsi. He exclaims that what bothers him most is “that they invent speculations.”
He assures that, after the victory in the elections, he had no further contact with Orsi. “The next day he won the elections he came to see me in the morning, I never spoke to him again,” he explains, making it clear that he has no intention of getting involved in current politics.
Mujica also emphasizes his desire to remain outside of politics. “I have no idea, nor do I intend to get involved in anything nor do I want to know anything because the worst thing there is is setting up a government,” he noted. This reinforces his decision to distance himself from any public and political activity at this time in his life.
Diagnosis and previous treatments
In AprilMujica informed the press of the discovery of a tumor in the esophagus during a medical check-up. “I need to inform you that last Friday I went to Casmu to have a check-up in which it was discovered that I have a tumor in the esophagus, which is obviously very serious,” he explained. This diagnosis turned out to be critical, as it was considered doubly complex due to his long-standing immunological condition.
After confirmation of the malignancy of the tumor, radiotherapy treatment was started in Montevideo. However, this process was not without complications, affecting their ability to eat properly. In SeptemberMujica had to undergo surgery to perform a gastrostomyfacilitating their diet and managing the effects of the disease.
Advances and challenges in treatment
At the end of Decemberthe former president underwent another intervention to placing a stent in the esophagus. This procedure was performed with the aim of improving their quality of life and continuing with their diet. Since his last intervention, close sources have indicated that Mujica was coming “recovering very slowly.”
Throughout your treatment process, you have not only dealt with the physical effects of cancer, but also with public perception and speculation about its future. His communication about the disease has been clear and direct, seeking to avoid misunderstandings.
