“Serious environmental impacts”
This week a group of technicians and researchers from botanical agronomy, conservation biology, ecology and zoology expressed their opposition to the perimeter ring extension project.
In an open letter addressed to Environment Minister Robert Bouvierpointed out that it would generate “serious environmental impacts” and should be rejected or relocated. Among the arguments, it is realized that the project would negatively affect a key ecological zone of the green belt of the metropolitan area of Montevideo.
Within this zone, a departmental protected area (Humedales de Santa Lucía Natural Park) would be affected in particular, integrated into a national area (Humedales de Santa Lucía protected area with managed resources).
Likewise, some of the main traditional productive activities (farm, orchard, viticulture and fruit growing) and recent ones (rural tourism and nature) in the area would be affected, as well as recreational and educational activities.
