The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced the modification of the National Single License Plate Regulations with the aim of strengthening the vehicle identification system.
Among the main updates is the change in the design and size of the plates for category L vehicles, which includes motorcycles, motorcycle taxis and quadricycles.
The new plates will be larger, going from 110×190 millimeters to 170×200 millimeters. In addition, they will have more visible digits thanks to the use of black characters on a white background, facilitating readability. The format will also be modified to include three letters and four digits, instead of the current two letters and four digits.
The Supreme Decree also incorporates categories L6 and L7, which correspond to quadricycles used in the transport of passengers or goods. This change seeks to address the specific needs of these vehicles.
In support of sustainability and energy security, the MTC will implement a special badge on license plates for electric and hybrid vehicles, which will include the text “hybrid or electric.”
It is worth remembering that last October, Raúl Pérez Reyes, head of the MTC, anticipated these modifications by pointing out that the new license plates will improve vehicle identification through surveillance cameras. According to the minister, this measure will contribute significantly to the fight against organized crime, especially in cases where linear motorcycles are used to commit crimes.
“We will be able to register who is the authorized person on that motorcycle, and when it passes through the different areas where there will be hundreds of surveillance cameras, well, there they will be able to register all these motorcycle license plates and we will be able to make a “Better monitoring of those who commit crimes using linear motorcycles as an instrument to commit crimes.”explained Pérez Reyes.
