MP respects decision of the Executive to grant safe conduct to González Urrutia

The Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, expressed this Sunday through a statement the position that the Public Ministry assumes, referring to the position of the Head of State, who has granted together with the government of Spain the status of political asylum to the former presidential candidate of the extreme right González Urrutia.

In this regard, Saab stressed that the governments of Venezuela and Spain agreed to grant the citizen a safe-conduct pass so that he could leave Venezuelan territory.

Below is the full text of the statement

Public Prosecutor’s Office

Release:

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela makes a statement to the national and international community regarding the latest events that have occurred with citizen Edmundo González Urrutia, who had been requested by means of an arrest warrant for his repeated failures to appear before summons issued by the 58th National Prosecutor’s Office to be interviewed.

  1. This Public Prosecutor’s Office had first-hand knowledge of the exact moment when citizen Edmundo González Urrutia entered the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas. We were then informed by the Venezuelan authorities of the request for asylum made by him, within the framework of international human rights law and diplomatic relations between States.
  2. The governments of Spain and Venezuela agreed to grant a safe-conduct to citizen Edmundo González Urrutia so that he could leave the national territory and take refuge in the asylum granted by Spain. Consequently, this Public Prosecutor’s Office expresses its absolute respect for the decisions of the Venezuelan Executive so that, in compliance with the right to asylum, guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic in its article 69, it has granted the corresponding safe-conduct.
  3. Once in his communication to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, received on September 4, citizen Edmundo González Urrutia expressed his recognition of our authority as Attorney General of the Republic and the powers that the institution we lead has based on the Constitution and the Law; this Public Prosecutor’s Office has maintained the close communication established during the last few days with the legal representative of Mr. González Urrutia, attorney José Vicente Haro, for the purposes of the case that this office is investigating.

The season ends

Before proceeding to read the statement, Saab described all the events that have taken place as a “humorous work of a genre that could be called comedy, of buffoonery, started this year 2024 and which was named fatefully: until the end.”

He said that “the last performance” was on the night of Saturday, September 7, when its “main protagonist Edmundo González Urrutia staged his farewell on the runway of Maiquetía airport.”

He added that there was “a supporting actress who played the role of the villain, who in the three final chapters of the play, which had very few viewers (…) appeared riding alone in a truck without the main character appearing.”

Saab even pointed out that in the “agonizing episodes,” some viewers knew that there were threats by phone not to go.

“These scenes were evident in previous chapters, when the one who played the villain threatened the main character of that mediocre play, snatching the microphone from him, when he was going to give his speech, because it was a play for two, a villain actress and an older man who played the role of the main character,” he said.

The head of the criminal action went on to say that the following chapters were “rehashes.”

He said that with the statement he had to “seal one of the most decisive moments of the case that was initiated against this citizen González Urrutia.”
