A humorous joke on TikTok can land anyone who dedicates their humor against the government of Nicolás Maduro in jail, as shown by Olga Mata and Florencio Gil Mata, accused of “instigating hatred” for recording a video on a social network.

The punch line of the joke is to insinuate that the “widow” arepa in honor of Cilia Flores receives that name because, according to the tiktoker, all of Venezuela wants the first lady to be a widow.

The Law Against Hate was approved in November 2017 and reformed almost two years later, which includes sanctions against those who use social networks to offend others, or make accusations against them without evidence.
This law is made up of 25 articles, and punishes those found guilty of promoting “hate crimes” with sentences of up to 20 years in prison. Promoting hateful messages on social media is prohibited, and must be removed within six hours. Otherwise, sanctions are foreseen against the person who spread the message.
