In the early hours of this Monday, October 21, the sad death of Egidio Cuadrado, a popular accordion player who left an indelible legacy on vallenato artists and was responsible for internationalizing the genre, was announced.

Egidio Rafael Cuadrado Hinojosa has established himself as one of the references of vallenato worldwide. Recognized for his exceptional talent as an accordion player, Cuadrado has left an indelible mark on Colombian music, especially for his collaboration with the famous Carlos Vives and for being co-creator of iconic songs such as “La Provincia.”
Since its beginnings, Cuadrado has toured both Colombia and abroad, carrying with it the legacy of singer-songwriter Rafael Escalona. His musical history began in 1985, when he won the prestigious title of “Rey Vallenato” at the Vallenata Legend Festival.
In that same year, during a lively party, he met Carlos Vives, who at that time was known as “Gallito” Ramírez.
On that memorable afternoon, Cuadrado performed three emblematic songs: “La casa en el aire” by Escalona, ”Ausencia” by Santander Durán and “El cantor de Fonseca” by Carlos Huertas.
“From that meeting began a career that would culminate years later in the successful television series ‘Escalona’,” says Egidio. Furthermore, he feels proud to be part of ‘La Provincia’, a group that has marked three decades of history and recognition in Vallenato music. Cuadrado also received a Latin Grammy, an honor that highlights his impact on the music industry.
