The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), informed that the expulsion of journalists from the House plenary, last Tuesday (9), was due to security reasons due to the occupation of the Board of Directors by deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ).
“In accordance with Board Act No. 145/2020, the Legislative Police requested the removal of advisors, civil servants and press professionals from the plenary to ensure the safety of those present”, explains Motta in a note published this Thursday (11).
After the press professionals left, Glauber Braga was forcibly removed of the Chamber Bureau by legislative police officers. The deputy was protesting against the vote to revoke his mandate. During the action, journalists were attacked by the Legislative Police.
The TV Câmara broadcast of the plenary was interrupted. The Presidency of the House said that this was a normal act since the session was suspended.
“According to Service Order No. 5/2022, which establishes the order of priority for official broadcasts, the interruption of a plenary session automatically leads to the broadcast of the subsequent legislative event. Thus, TV Câmara began broadcasting the Health Commission meeting, a standard technical procedure”, says the Chamber’s note.
Attack on the press
The National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj) said that the expulsion of journalists of the plenary was “extremely serious” and considered the measure “a restriction on the work of the press and on the freedom and right to information of the Brazilian population”.
The president of Fenaj, Samira Castro, told Agência Brasil that the security issue does not justify the action.
“Especially because they were not just removed, they were removed with truculence, they were attacked and this is very serious. The note does not convince us because it was possible to dialogue, minimally, with those workers who were there doing their work”, he said.
Meeting canceled
Motta arrived at schedule a meeting with representatives appointed by the House Press Committee for this Wednesday (10), but canceled the schedule then, citing lack of time.
Before yesterday’s session, the plenary was once again closed to the press without explaining the reason to professionals who usually circulate freely in the Chamber’s main voting room.
In today’s note, two days after the expulsion episode, Motta regretted the inconvenience caused to communication professionals and reaffirmed that there was no intention to limit the exercise of journalistic activity.
“The information presented by the journalists will be incorporated into the ongoing investigation in order to identify possible excesses in the measures adopted throughout the process of resuming work”, he added.
Act against censorship
This Wednesday, a group of journalists performed in the Chamber of Deputies against censorship and the violent action of the legislative police officers the previous day.
Images and reports show brutal action by legislative police officers against reporters, cameramen and photographers who were trying to carry out their work. Some professionals needed medical attention due to attacks, which included pulling, elbowing and pushing.
The Brazilian Press Association reported that it will take legal action against the president of the Chamber for “violence committed by the Legislative Police”.
