These data show that motorcycles continue to be the main cause of deaths on the roads. Despite this, the General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transportation Safety (DIGESETT) reported that it seized 7,056 motorcycles because their drivers were traveling without protective helmets, which has not been able to reverse the trend.
Of the deceased, nine died inside the road safety device and 21 outside it. The latter include 23 deaths from motorcycles, five from light vehicles and two from run overs. All deaths were certified by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF).
Meanwhile, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT) begins the year 2025 without a specific program to reduce accidents related to motorcycles. Although 5,522 visual vehicle technical inspections were carried out in interurban public transport units in 59 terminals nationwide, these actions do not cover motorcycles.
The provinces with the most accidents reported were: Santo Domingo province (13%); San Pedro de Macoris (8%); Saint Christopher (7%); Altagracia and Puerto Plata (6% each) and National District (5%).
Regarding schedules, 37% of accidents occurred between 12:00 noon and 6:00 p.m., while 26% occurred between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon, and 21% between 6:00 pm and 12:00 at night. These periods concentrate the majority of recorded incidents.
The need for authorities to take more effective measures to reduce the impact of traffic accidents, especially those involving motorcycles, is evident.
