Mother’s Day: merchants expect a good level of sales in traditional items

The sale of clothing in retail stores grew 22.8% year-on-year in March

This year, customers will find special events, talks and bank promotions in shopping malls.

Merchants expect a good level of sales in the coming days due to the movement generated by Mother’s Day in the traditional items of the date such as clothing, footwear and gastronomy, according to officials and directors of different business entities.

“The projections are positive, the malls have good expectations for Mother’s Day. At the sales level, the malls have been in recent months with a positive trend compared to last year and we believe that this trend will continue,” Silvia told Télam Acerbo, manager of the Argentine Chamber of Shoppings.

He pointed out that “usually for this date the most sought-after items are clothing, footwear, leather goods, perfumery, technology and sports,” and explained that the financing that brands are mostly offering is from three and six installments without interest.

“This year for Mother’s Day, customers will find special events, talks, bank promotions and gifts for purchases in shopping malls,” he added.

Fabián Tarrío, director of the Commerce and Services sector of the Argentine Confederation of Medium-sized Enterprises (CAME), told Télam that “This year we have moderate expectations and we hope that we will at least sell at last year’s levels at constant values.”

“We believe that sales are going to be the same as last year; in 2021, compared to 2020, sales had risen notably because in 2020 everything was closed, this year I think we are going to maintain last year’s sales,” he said.

He pointed out that “people always aim to give away or share a table for such significant days. Mother’s Day, Christmas, Children’s Day and Father’s Day are emblematic dates on which we sell reasonably well.”

The director of CAME maintained that “clothing is the strongest item” in sales for this date, and that “the topic of gastronomy has also increased a lot, this year they are going to take advantage of being able to eat outside and it becomes the gift that the family gives itself”.

Regarding financing, he said that “businesses are using three and six installments, nothing more, because in 12 installments the interest is high and it is not convenient for businesses,” and he remarked that “Now 12 is the only tool we have to finance sales.”

He explained that “last year the average ticket was around 4,000 pesos and this year it is supposed to be at least double,” and noted that despite the fact that “it is a complicated date due to the economic times we are experiencing, The truth is that people buy if they have cash, because they know they have to spend it to prevent inflation”

He referred to “some missing merchandise due to some supplies that are imported,” but assured that “in general, businesses are farsighted and buy little by little and stock up, because Mother’s Day after Christmas is the most important in sales “.

From the consulting firm Focus Market they indicated a projection of Average spending for Mother’s Day gift of the order of the 7,500 pesos.

“Mother’s Day is the second most important business date of the year. The prices of goods and services with the highest sales projection are those with the greatest price variation: clothing, footwear, wines and flowers,” analyzed Damián Di Pace, director of the consultancy.

He added that “business expectations are very important for this holiday at a time when retail sales, according to CAME, fell by 2.1% year-on-year in its latest measurement.”

Sales expectations in CABA

On the other hand, the SME Research Center of the Federation of Commerce of the City of Buenos Aires (Fecoba) surveyed the sales expectations for the date in the City’s businesses.

46.3% said they have uncertain expectations regarding sales in this celebration, 23.2% projected that they will be high, 22.1% low, 5.3% very low and 3.2% have very high sales expectations.

“Most of the answers are between uncertain and low sales expectations for this celebration”Fecoba pointed out.

He indicated that “among the negative causes mentioned, more than 50% mention the current economic situation of the country, followed by the increase in the prices of products offered and low wages as the third reason.”

According to the survey, 36.8% of businesses expect the units sold to remain the same compared to last year, 34.7% think they will drop somewhat, 17.9% think they will increase slightly and 10.5% think they will drop a lot.

“Analyzing sales in units, most of the answers are that it will be similar to last year or it will drop somewhat. Among the positive causes for those who consider it so, the main cause of the increase in sales expectations will be that people prefer to buy goods or services and not keep pesos,” he concluded.
