Mother who burned her baby in a pot does not remember the crime and is charged with infanticide

The strange death of a one-month-old baby in the community of Quirahuani, municipality of Yamparáez (Chuquisaca), has shocked the country. The child’s mother, a 19-year-old girl, was charged with the crime of infanticide after allegedly having placed the minor in a pot of boiling water while preparing soup.

The departmental prosecutor of Chuquisaca, Mauricio Nava Morales, confirmed that The woman declared that she did not remember the event.. “The mother said she suffered thoughts that she cannot explain and lost consciousness until her partner returned home,” Nava said.

The crime occurred around 6:00 p.m. on December 24, while the woman was cooking in the company of her three-year-old son and the baby. According to the older boy’s testimony, he saw his mother place the baby in the pot of boiling soup.

Hours later, the baby was transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Sucre, where He died at 1:00 a.m. on December 25 due to third degree burns that affected 60% of his body.

The woman’s common-law husband, 27, found the baby naked and lying on the bed when he returned from work. In his statement, he mentioned that the young mother suffers from epileptic seizuresalthough they never sought medical attention to treat the condition.

The Prosecutor’s Office formalized the accusation against the mother for infanticide and will request his preventive detention while investigations are carried out. “We have important evidence, such as the statement of the eldest son, who witnessed the event,” Nava added.

For his part, the departmental commander of the Police, Colonel Mirko Antonio Sokol, explained that the investigation will seek to determine the state of mental health of the accused and the family environment in which she lived.
