A man drove his vehicle against the front doors of a Latter -day Church of Jesus Christ in Grand Blanc, Michigan, and fired in at least ten people, killing one of them, local police said on Sunday (28).
The shooter left the vehicle firing a robbery gun, said Grand Blanc police chief William Renye. He added that hundreds of people were in the church, which caught fire with the vehicle’s collision.
The smoke came out of the building as the firefighters fought the fire with water jets, and fire trucks and emergency vehicles were parked nearby, showed images on social networks.
Authorities believe they will find more victims in the rubble, Renye said.
Police did not immediately disclose the name of the suspect, who died at the scene in an exchange of fire with two police officers who ran to the church, the police chief said. Renye described him as a 40 -year -old man from Burton, Michigan.
“My heart is broken by the Grand Blanc community,” Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement published on social networks.
“Violence anywhere, especially in places of worship, is unacceptable,” he added.
National authorities, including US Attorney General Pam Bondi, and President Donald Trump, made posts on the shooting.
“Such violence in a place of worship is to leave the heart and frightening,” he posted Bondi at X.
In a statement on the Social Truth, Trump said the shooting “seems to be another Christian attack in the United States of America” and said the FBI was at the scene.
“This epidemic of violence in our country must end, immediately!” He wrote in capital letters.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints is informally known as the Mormon Church.
Grand Blanc, a city of 7,700 inhabitants, is located about 97 kilometers northwest of Detroit.
