Reviewing the presidential electoral reform initiative “will take the necessary time,” due to its scope and would be approved in May of next year, after holding forums in both chambers of Congress, Morena legislators anticipated.

Senator Verónica Camino stressed that in the reform “what the majority says” will prevail and although the opinion of the opposition parties will be taken into account, “perhaps we are not going to comply with their proposal one hundred percent, but we will take 20 percent.”

However, the National Action Party (PAN) highlighted that the new electoral model cannot only include the content that Morena wants to impose, but rather be built between all the benches so that it has the greatest number of votes.

“If this is not the case, if it is a reform with a single vision, it will be a historic mistake,” said the president of the board of directors of the Permanent Commission, Kenia López Rabadán.

He argued that it is necessary to prevent organized crime from “getting its hands into the electoral processes, not putting up candidates and not defining the mayors. That is what electoral reform should be about and hopefully that is why we can build a political agreement among all… the enemy is not the parties, it is organized crime.”

In turn, Senator Verónica Camino said that it has been anticipated that the presidential initiative will probably be sent to the Senate.

“We are going to be waiting and obviously we are not going to receive and approve it at that time. We will do what is appropriate so that we can talk about its approval perhaps in May,” he said.

Due to the relevance of the reform, he explained, a second round of open parliament forums will be called – in addition to the one carried out by the presidential commission – “because an electoral reform is not just anything.”

Meanwhile, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) announced that it will not attend this exercise, so as not to validate the initiative. “We do not want to enter into that dialogue because it would be accepting the discussion of a reform that does not come from the democratic forces, from the opposition, when it is rather a journey to a new regime,” said the coordinator of the deputies of that party, Rubén Moreira.

Neither does he tricolor will present a proposal, because “at the time of making it, we would agree to discuss it and negotiate things… We are never going to be paleros. It is a trap. If you bring a proposal, they tell you, ‘sit down and talk and we will talk’. That is being with a spurious parliament.”
